Read below about the Breast Lift and Breast Reduction procedures also performed at our office in Sarasota.
Sarasota Breast ReductionBreast reduction surgery is typically performed at our practice in Sarasota to create a more proportional chest curvature with your overall body shape, and to alleviate problems with activities, health, and clothing. The breast reduction procedure can also help achieve symmetry where breasts are not equal in size. In Sarasota, Dr. Rubinstein can change the shape and firmness of the breasts to create a more aesthetic appeal with breast reduction surgery. Along with breast reduction, nipple surgery may also be performed in Sarasota to reduce areola size. In fact, the breast reduction candidate may require a breast lift to achieve a fully satisfactory outcome.
Breast reduction plastic surgery is usually performed in our Sarasota practice under general anesthesia, so you will sleep through the breast reduction procedure. The breast comprises glandular tissues, fatty tissues, and skin: all three areas are surgically reduced as needed during the breast reduction.
Before entering the operating room in our Sarasota office for breast reduction, Dr. Rubinstein will ask you to sit upright. While sitting, surgical markings will be drawn on your breasts. The markings outline the "sitting-up" position of your breasts, to make the correct incisions later during breast reduction surgery when you are lying down. The breast reduction drawings will typically take the form of an anchor — encircling the areola and extending above the areola to the new location of the nipple. The breast reduction markings also extend down vertically below the nipple and horizontally following the natural curve of the crease beneath your breast.
The incision for the breast reduction is made along the surgical markings. Flaps are created on both sides of the breast and the excess skin, fat, and glandular tissues are extracted. In most breast reduction cases the nipples are moved to a higher position on the breast, but remain attached to the nerves and blood vessels. For very large breasts, however, the nipples may need to be moved and grafted to a completely new location. In these cases, the nipples are removed from the underlying connecting tissues and you will lose sensation in the nipple and areola.
The nipple and areola are usually moved to a new position. The position of the nipple is usually vertically level with the crease on the underside of the breast. After breast reduction surgery, the flaps of skin (that were once above the nipple) are refolded around and beneath the breast, pulled to the front of the breast around the nipple, and sutured in place. The reduction of breast tissue and skin reduces the weight of the breast and reshapes it into proportion.
Upon completion of the breast reduction procedure, stitches remain around the areola and nipple area, in a vertical line beneath the nipple and horizontally under the breast. If the breasts were not too overly large, then some surgical breast reduction techniques can avoid the horizontal scar altogether.
The breast lift surgical procedure may be performed under local anesthesia (awake) or general anesthesia (asleep), at our practice in Sarasota. Your time in breast lift surgery is typically two to three-and-a-half hours.
The degree of breast lift needed generally will determine the number and length of the incisions that Dr. Rubinstein will make in our office in Sarasota. The more breast lift a patient needs, the more likely the patient will need a breast lift with more extensive incisions. In other words, someone who comes to our practice in Sarasota needs a significant breast lift likely will not be a candidate for a periareolar incision, but rather the "anchor incision" (described below).
One surgical technique for breast lift we use in Sarasota involves three incisions that form an anchor shape ("anchor incision"):
These incisions create flaps where excess skin will be removed. There are other breast lift techniques we perform at our Sarasota practice like the Crescent Lift and Peri-Areolar Bennelli Technique.
Excess skin may also be removed as the nipple and areola are moved to a higher location on the breast. The nipple is normally positioned so that it will be even (vertically) with the lower crease between the breast and chest. The skin that was previously above the nipple is brought down around the nipple and sutured together under the breast. The nipple and areola remain connected to the underlying breast tissue and the associated nerve and blood supply, reducing the chances of sensation loss.
For some breast lift patients we see at our office in Sarasota, other breast lift techniques may be appropriate that may include omitting the horizontal incision along the bottom of the breast and thus leave one less scar after breast lift surgery. For women in Sarasota with smaller breasts and less droopiness who visit our Sarasota practice, a concentric series of incisions can be used, omitting both the vertical and horizontal incisions.
